Portfolio: Shadows
Shadows consists of seven flameworked borosilicate glass wall sculptures to represent the seven ecosystems of Canada. Shadows draws attention to the disappearing ecosystems of Canada that are quickly becoming shadows on our landscapes due to the climate crisis. Shadows allows the viewer to recognize that by losing these crucial ecosystems, we are loosing ourselves.
As a full time flameworked borosilicate glass artist, glass allows me to express the fragility of the climate crisis through a delicate medium. Each wall sculpture is framed by a glass triangle to symbolize the alchemy symbol for fire, in the words of environmental activist Greta Thunberg “our house is on fire”. Black glass animal silhouettes represent the loss of biodiversity and the species at risk. Brightly coloured flora brings life to each piece and provides hope for a sustainable future. When viewing this series it is important to pay attention to the glass itself as well as the shadows the glass casts on the wall - the wall shadows show each piece’s title as well as a feeling of each ecosystem slipping away.
Shadows was selected by Canadian Heritage and the New Brunswick Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture to represent New Brunswick virtually at the 2021 Frankfurt Book Fair in Frankfurt, Germany. In addition, Shadows was featured in The Flow Magazine’s Women in Glass issue - printed in the United States.
